What is the length of the GWC program?

6 weeks for high school students
8 weeks for undergraduate students

How much would I get paid for my participation in the GWC Program?

High School students will receive a total $1,750 (before taxes) at the end of the summer program.

Undergraduate students will receive a total of $3,000 (before taxes) in two occasions. The first at the end of June and at the end of the summer program.

How many hours do I have to work every week?

This is a professional experience and every intern is required to work 40 hours per week at their respective workplaces.

Do I need to participate in all of the leadership seminar and educational activities?

Yes, it is mandatory to participate in all of the leadership seminars and educational activities.

How important it is for me to attend the events and be on time during the GWC summer experience?

Very important! As a professional you are required to be on time and participate in all of the activities related to the GWC program.

When would I receive an answer about my GWC program application?

You will receive an answer during the month of April indicating your acceptance or denial into the program.

Do I need to send copies of my transcripts or letter of references to Iowa State University?

YES, you do need to send copies of your transcripts or references to Iowa State University.

Do I need to prepare an essay, a poster and an oral presentation about my research project?

Yes, you need to prepare a professional paper, a poster and an oral presentation for the GWC Summer Symposium.

Who will help me to prepare my essay, poster, and oral presentation?

Your mentor or graduate assistant will help you prepare the essay, oral presentation, and poster.

Can I be dismissed from the GWC Summer Internship Program?

Yes, if you are regularly late, absent, or do not follow the Code of Conduct established by Iowa State University you will be automatically dismissed from the program without pay. (http://policy.iastate.edu/policy/SDR).

What are my responsibilities as an intern of the GWC program?
  • Work a total of 40 hours per week.
  • Attend all leadership and educational activities.
  • Prepare a research paper and submit electronic copies to the GWC program coordinator.
  • Prepare a poster and oral presentation to be presented at the GWC Symposium.
  • Complete the necessary requirements to be officially checked out of the residence hall at the completion of the program.
  • Maintain and submit an electronic journal of all daily activities performed at the laboratory.
  • Prepare and submit a professional portfolio that will include:
    • Reflections about professional competencies
    • Answers to the weekly journal questions
    • Daily journal log of professional experiences
    • A printed and electronic copy of the Research Paper
    • A printed and electronic copy of the Research Poster
    • A creative timeline of your summer experiences at ISU
  • Understand that as an Iowa State intern, you are required to abide by the rules and regulations concerning alcohol, drugs and sexual harassment at Iowa State University. Remember that if you are found in violation of any of these rules and regulations, you will be sent home without pay for the remainder of the program.
